Birth Card Calculator

Every Major Arcana carries a number, and your birthday hides one too. Add up every digit of your birth date and reduce the total to 22 or below — the corresponding Major Arcana is your Personality Card, the tarot's answer to life-path numerology: the temperament and lessons that keep reappearing in your life.

Enter your birth date and this page does the math locally in your browser — your birthday never leaves this device. Each card in your result links to its full meaning, and you can add it to your collection while you're here.

How It Works

The method is the digit-sum technique attributed to Mary K. Greer: add every digit of your birth date into a total; if the total exceeds 22, add its digits together until it falls between 1 and 22 — the matching Major Arcana is your Personality Card. For June 15, 1978: 1+9+7+8+0+6+1+5=37, then 3+7=10 — the Wheel of Fortune.

Keep reducing the Personality Card to a single digit for the Soul Card: the Wheel (10) reduces to 1, the Magician. If the first total is already 22 or less (as with October 7, 1901: 1+9+0+1+1+0+0+7=19), the reduction starts right away — 19 is the one special case, descending all the way to 1 and yielding a rare three-card set: the Sun, the Wheel of Fortune, and the Magician.

A note on schools: other traditions compute birth cards differently (some add two-digit groupings), so the same birthday can yield different results. This site uses Greer's digit-sum method — treat the result as a mirror for self-reflection rather than a verdict.

Personality & Soul Cards

The Personality Card answers "who am I": a long-term lesson card describing the temperament, gifts, and recurring situations you carry with you. The Soul Card answers "why am I here": the deeper motive behind the Personality Card, often recognized only in the second half of life.

When the Personality Card and the Soul Card are the same card (the first total is already a single digit), the tradition reads it as a highly concentrated lesson — that card's energy is the recurring theme of your life, its gift and its blind spot written in the same place.

The Thirteen Birth Card Sets

The table below lists the thirteen birth card sets by Personality Card number; the numbers in each row are the reduction chain (19 is the three-card special case). When the Personality Card is a single digit, it doubles as the Soul Card — see the note above. People sharing a set share the same archetypes — checking friends' and family's birthdays is one of the most fun little exercises while learning the cards.
