Tarot and Timing

“When” is the question tarot hears most, and the one most easily answered wrong. This page is a quick reference only: what time-related cards can give you, what they cannot, and what shape the question should be rewritten into. The full treatment of the method is in chapter 10 of the tutorial; it is not repeated here.

This site's line is three axes: the number gives the stage, the suit gives the speed, and the position in the spread gives the stretch. Together they describe “how far into this stretch the matter is, whether this stretch moves fast, whether it is happening or about to happen” — and there is no calendar inside them. Any concrete date in a reading was added by the reader, not given by the cards.

Three axes: locate first, then talk about pace

The stage axis — read the number

Which square of the cycle curve has this reached?

One to ten is one complete curve: 1 is a beginning that just landed, 4 sits where stability and stagnation are separated by a hair, 8 accumulates one coin at a time through craft, 10 is endgame and overload. When a pip card appears in the spread, read its stage before anything else.

The speed axis — read the suits

Does this stretch normally move fast, or slowly?

Wands (fire) and Swords (air) are quick, Cups (water) need to ferment, Pentacles (earth) are slowest but the most solid. When suits cluster in a run of cards, the tempo information arrives before you read any single card.

The position axis — read the spread

Is this happening now, or only about to happen?

The past / present / future of the three-card spread is one timeline, and the future position reads as trend, not as a settled result; the Four Seasons spread puts the quarter straight into its positions, with the practical plane holding its own slot.

Three kinds of question the cards cannot answer

  • Concrete dates for signing, payment, a reply, or meeting — those depend on how many approval layers the other side runs, what financial process they are in, and two people's schedules. The source is process and people, and tarot is not connected to it.
  • Loop predictions such as “will it come around again” — a repeated card reads as your structure having not moved, not as events replaying unchanged.
  • Any phrasing that hands the action over to a date, such as “I just have to wait until that day” — it does not make anything arrive sooner, it only trades the action you should be taking for a countdown.

Rewrite a date question into a stage question

When will he reply to me?

If the reply stays long delayed, what am I most likely to get wrong inside that wait?

When will this contract be signed?

Which piece is still missing, so that signing is not forced?

When will I find a job?

In the stretch that follows, which step should I move first?

How much longer will this relationship drag on?

What is still being held together here — am I dragging it, or is it growing?

Switch to units you can actually check

Day

One card a day, three minutes of review in the evening

Write down what it matched. The meaning moves from something memorized to something witnessed.

Quarter

Follows the solar terms, four fixed points a year

Look only at whether that position on the practical plane moved. The Pentacles slot holds progress, not wishes.

Cycle

Read the same matter again a month later

Lay both sets of cards side by side and ask one question only: did the structure change?
